Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is a dynamic practice which builds concentration and which emphasizes stability and strength in equal proportion to flexibility. It links one posture to the next in a unique flow, which, in essence, is a manifestation of the subtle movement of the life force, of prana. Ashtanga Vinyasa promotes balance: a balance of strength and flexibility, lightness and heaviness, movement and stillness. Through vinyasa one may come to know the vibration of life. This integration arises when breathing and movement become one. The mind is then set free and the practice becomes like a meditation in motion, and can act as a conduit for a deeper exploration of our core identity and being.
Lawrence's classes are rooted in the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga tradition, but draw on the practice and training from many systems of yoga, including Iyengar and classical Hatha yoga. The primary focus is on proper alignment and breathing and how to blend these together in the practice. Moment to moment awareness of body and mind is cultivated and strengthened, and bandhas (energy locks) and specific breathing exercises (pranayama) are also covered. Tools will be given in order for students to develop their own personal practice and to integrate the fundamentals of the practice into their daily lives. Most importantly, patience and a sense of humour will be nurtured in order for students to practice with a sense of joy and harmony.
The Benefits of Yoga
Through the practice of yoga we can tap into the infinite wisdom of our bodies and unite our consciousness with the pure awareness of the present moment. Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj", which means to yoke. In yoga, we stay rooted in the "yoke" of our being in order to generate deep concentration and stillness of the mind.
By doing this we become open to receiving many other benefits from the practice of yoga. These include:
- deep relaxation and release of tension
- increased energy levels and reduced fatigue
- emotional balance and better able to cope with distress and suffering
- calming of the mind
- strengthening the nervous system
- cleansing, charging and vitalizing the nerves, lungs and bloodstream
- alleviating insomnia and nervousness
- the generation of loving kindness and positive feelings for all living beings
Lawrence is available for private yoga and meditation classes for individuals and/or groups.
